"No topic in publishing and information has been more talked about in recent years than electronic and optical communication technology and its impact on existing media and on the future of paper" (Rennel et al., 1984). This statement is the first line of a book, published over 20 years ago, that considers the impacts of information and communication technology (ICT) on the paper industry and markets. Since then, the world has experienced the spread of new ICT innovations to mass markets such as the internet, broadband and mobile phones. While the world forest sector has also been fundamentally changed by the development of ICT, there are still no comprehensive or systematic studies as to how. Nor are there any studies as to how ICT is likely to change the sector in the future. This study aims to fill some of those gaps. (Excerpt from the introductory chapter by the editors).

Modelización del Crecimiento y la Evolución de Bosques
(in Spanish)
Editores: Klaus von Gadow, Pedro Real, Juan Gabriel

Forging a New Framework for Sustainable Forestry: Recent Developments in European Forest Law
Schmithüsen F., Herbst P., Le Master D. C. (eds.), 2000: Forging a New Framework for Sustainable Forestry: Recent Developments in European Forest Law. IUFRO World Series Volume 10. International Union of Forestry Research Organizations, IUFRO Secretariat Vienna; Chair of Forest Policy and Forest Economics, ETH, Zurich, 354 pp.
ISBN 3-901347-24-0 ISSN 1016-3263
New forest laws have been adopted in Eastern European countries as part of their transition to a market economy with considerable effect on the structure of forest land ownership, improvements in management regulations and modernization of the forest sector’s institutional framework. New forest legislation has also been developed in several countries in Western Europe in order to adapt its content to changing economic conditions, new social demands and more political participation of interest groups and citizens at local and regional levels. The selection of 35 reviewed papers submitted to the Research Group on Forest Law and Environmental Legislation of the International Union of Forestry Research Organisations (IUFRO) provides an overview of the dynamic and multifaceted development in sustainable forest management and documents recent changes in forest laws of 25 European countries. The text collection is an important source of information on forest law development in the European region and a comprehensive reference for comparative analysis.

Even though English has become the lingua franca of science, it is often useful to be able to understand significant contributions not written in English. The present IUFRO World Series publication Vol. 9-jp compiled by Kenji Naito is an excellent contribution towards improving the understanding at the international level. This volume presents the Japanese definitions of technical terms with reference to the German publication in this series. At the same time, a note is given after the definition, where there are some differences between the definitions in German and Japanese. A list of equivalent terms is given in 7 languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Hungarian. IUFRO Guidelines for Designing Multipurpose Resource Inventories
Editor: H. Gyde Lund. A project of IUFRO 4.02.02. IUFRO World Series Vol. 8. 216 p
ISBN 3-901347-09-7 ISSN 1016-3263 FDC 524.61:524.63.
Abstract: Diverse and often conflicting demands upon land and natural resources around the world require require that decision makers cater for a wide range of potential human interests within any given area such as agriculture, biomass production, biodiversity, recreation, and urban expansion. This means that administrators have to look at the land and its resources for a variety of potential uses. To increase the benefits of data collected and to minimize expenditures, inventory specialists are turning more and more to multipurpose or integrated resource inventories. This is particularly true at the broader decision-making scales – provincial, national, regional and global. These guidelines provide basic information on Multipurpose Resource Inventories (MRI) for the inventory planner and the decision maker at the provincial or national level although the instructions are useful at the local level as well. The guidelines are based upon the world wide survey mentioned above, a literature review and the personal experiences of nearly 60 contributing co-authors. We discuss the need for MRIs, the information requirements, support structure, and the design and implementation issues in depth.

Perspectives of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding in a Changing World
ISSN 1016-3263 ISBN 3-901347-07-0
The aim of this volume of the IUFRO World Series is to present an up-to-date overview of some selected areas of forest genetic and tree breeding research. The review of problems of tree breeding, provenance research and conservation of forest genetic resources is dedicated not only to forest geneticists and tree breeders but also to scientists in related fields as a source of information.
The volume is focusing on questions of practical breeding which is getting presently less attention than deserved. It should not be overlooked that increasing the production of man-made forests remains an important goal on a global scale.
