First EVOLTREE Conference 2021: Genomics and Adaptation in Forest Ecosystems

The first EVOLTREE Conference focuses on the genomics of trees and interacting species from evolutionary, demographic, and ecological perspectives. EVOLTREE is a European network of institutions engaged in studying the evolution and functioning of forest ecosystems, in particular trees as the foundation species in forest stands. A prime topic in the face of ongoing climate change is to elucidate how trees, together with their associated organisms such as mycorrhizal fungi, respond to rapid environmental changes. Contributions are welcome that apply innovative approaches and consider the relevance of their research in the context of biodiversity conservation through natural dynamics or silvicultural interference.

Date: 14-17 September 2021
Location: Birmensdorf, Switzerland
Organizers: EVOLTREE, hosted by WSL Birmensdorf (Switzerland)

XV World Forestry Congress: Building a Green, Healthy and Resilient Future with Forests

The Congress will bring together global forest stakeholders to review and analyze key challenges facing the sector and ways to address these. Participation is usually diverse, with representation from all regions and sectors; including the public and private sector, NGOs, CSOs, scientific or professional bodies, and forestry societies, as well as those who simply care about forests and the environment. The WFC 2021 will provide a unique opportunity for the global forestry community to consider the state and future of world forestry, particularly in the context of the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, while striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Congress will focus on defining the role of forests in the global developmental agenda (2030 Agenda) and other major agreements (Global Forest Goals, Paris Agreement, post-2020 global biodiversity framework) and identify key measures that must be put in place as the forest sector adjusts to the new reality and aims to help 'build back better'. Forests must be an integral part of discussions and decisions to be made on sustainable development, because this will determine the health, wellbeing and stability of the planet and the people.

Ecosystem Nutrition 2021 - New Approaches to Ecosystem Nutrition Phosphorus and Beyond

The ecological paradigm of the 'whole being more than the sum of its parts' is widely accepted as one of the most fascinating properties of ecosystems. Yet the emergence of nutrient dynamics within ecosystems is rarely addressed. Join us for the second "Ecosystem Nutrition" conference, the closing event of the of the joint research programme "Ecosystem Nutrition - Forest Strategies for limited Phosphorus Resources". The goal of the conference is to broaden approaches of plant nutrition to explore nutrient-related processes at the scale of ecosystems. During the conference we will link key findings from SPP 1685 to studies addressing also other nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and potassium). Especially welcome are contributions introducing holistic approaches for ecosystem nutrition research and results regarding relevant mechanisms and key players.

Date:  25-28 October 2021
Location:  Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
Organizers:  University of Freiburg

100 Years of Research in British Columbia, Canada

100 years ago the Canadian Province of British Columbia (BC) started investing in forest research. It was 1921 when the BC Forest Branch hired the first research scientist, J.L. Alexander, to work on forest regeneration, growth and yield, and fire protection. Since then the Research Program has delivered high-quality research, establishing BC as a world leader in natural resources stewardship. Over the past half century Research Program staff have produced more than 3,000 publications and decision aids that play a pivotal role in informing the public and the decision makers. The Ministry’s Research Program is organized into six Research Portfolios plus a vibrant Forest Genetics program. The Research Program is now represented by more than 70 research scientists plus dozens of technicians, students, and auxiliary staff. We are honoring this major milestone with a short and informative YouTube video.

Trees for the Future - Diversity and complexity for resilience and carbon storage

As a key part of actions to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the UK Government set a target of up to 19% woodland cover. Key decisions therefore are required concerning how and where we expand tree cover. Modern forestry is generally based on monocultures largely because of timber production. However, future forests will play a key role in climate change mitigation. It is therefore crucial that appropriate informed decisions are made with regard to the structure, composition and planning of future forests, in order to provide sustainable solutions that are of benefit to society. Mixed forests with their higher biodiversity, are likely to be better than monocultures in regulating the water cycle and sequestering carbon. A main objective of this conference is to explore state-of-the-art scientific evidence showing that higher tree species diversity enables higher productivity and stability, with a lower susceptibility to biotic and abiotic stress, together with a portfolio of ecosystem services, as well as economic and management benefits. Invited speakers will address these issues from the perspective of science/industry/economics/politics interfaces. A key aim is to produce a policy document that will inform UK government strategy.
