At a time when English has been established as the lingua franca of science, it is often useful to be able to read significant papers not written in English. The German language is rich in specialised forestry terms simply because forestry has always been a very important part of German life and culture. Many forestry terms were coined in German language, and for some there are no real equivalents in English or other languages (like e.g. for the terms Loshieb, Freihieb, Rändelung). The present IUFRO World Series publication Vol. 9-de compiled by Othmar Griess and Hort Kurth is an excellent contribution towards improving the understanding at the international level. A list of equivalent terms is given in 7 languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Hungarian, and Japanese. They are also providing definitions of technical terms related to yield regulation, forest inventory, forest planning and forest valuation and clarify their usage. A valuable document for all who are actively involved in forest mangement and related fields. (Klaus von Gadow, Coordinator, IUFRO Division 4)

In this book, the terminologies of related subjects, viz., forest fire, forest ranges and wildlife have been clubbed together to make it a comprehensive subject. However, each and every term has been explained in a very simple and lucid language so that even the non-foresters and particularly the students of various disciplines can understand easily. At the end of the terms, some common notes related to forest management, forest economics, forest fires, forest ranges and wildlife have been given to impart a first-hand and preliminary knowledge and information about the subject.
