IUFRO The Advocate for Forest Science.
The coordinating lead authors (CLAs) of the new GFEP assessment report met at the end of February in Singapore to refine the draft manuscripts of all chapters and discuss key messages emerging from the assessment.
The results of the assessment to date confirm that the forest regime involves a multitude of state and non-state actors, instruments and discourses that have shifted over time. The regime is trying to operate at many different levels and to take account of developments in a variety of other sectors where policy decisions will have an impact on forests. Yet, this complex 'mix' of elements also allows for cooperative relationships and positive regime interactions that can be nurtured by means of improved coordination, policy learning and structured participation.
The assessment report will provide concrete options and examples of how to capitalize on the complexity of the international forest regime. It will also trace the ways in which global forest governance architectures can influence domestic policy making in the direction of sustainability. The results of the assessment will be available in autumn 2010.
